First State Educate Hosts First Community Action Event

On June 10, we launched a series of community action events with “First Steps to Understanding Education: Navigating and Engaging with Delaware School Boards.” Yvonne Johnson addressed the audience of community members dedicated to the success of Delaware’s public schools.

Johnson shared information on how school boards can advocate for positive change, emphasizing the importance of community members working with school board members before, during and after an election. “We are the constituents, and the school board is accountable to us. When we speak up together, our voices amplify, and we can change the status quo.” Johnson discussed:

  • the importance of working with your local school board

  • how to learn about school board members and how to contact them

  • the issues facing Delaware’s school boards

  • the roles and responsibilities of school board members

  • the composition of Delaware’s school boards (see below)

  • how to get involved

Composition of Delaware’s School Boards

Building on the momentum from the inaugural First State Educate community action event, the next — “Understanding School Board Agendas” — is scheduled at 6 p.m. July 8. During the event, Yvonne Johnson will speak on understanding a school board agenda and how to ask for a topic to be addressed at a school board meeting. Knowing how to maintain an open dialogue with school board members is crucial for families and guardians who want to be heard in their child’s school district.

We hope you’ll join us at community action events as we expand to propel Delaware’s public schools forward. Students deserve a challenging curriculum taught by dedicated teachers, and family and community involvement is essential to spark that change. Register for the July 8 session here.
