It’s Time to Vote!
Delaware School Board Elections Taking Place May 14
As the ACLU of Delaware recently reported, “On Tuesday, May 14, Delawareans will once again have the chance to cast ballots in one of the most overlooked yet deeply impactful local races — the 2024 school board elections.”
The success of Delaware’s children depends on Delaware’s schools. The quality of Delaware’s schools depends on you — parents, guardians and community members concerned about our floundering educational system. With our public schools performing below national averages (only 53% of Delaware public school kindergarteners to 8th graders read on level, for example), it is critical that you vote in your local school board election on May 14. We must elect school leaders dedicated to improving Delaware’s public school outcomes.
School board members have substantial influence in our schools as they set districtwide policies and allocate funds. In fact, they serve as stewards of taxpayer dollars, making important fiscal decisions about our schools and their programs. By voting in your local school board election, you can elect qualified candidates and have a hand in shaping the schools in your community. Your vote affects decisions on curriculum, how funds are spent, and educational policies. Ultimately, your vote affects our children.
When evaluating school board candidates, consider their commitment to educational equity, transparency, and communication with the community. Look for people with relevant experience that can support the district’s needs, a proven track record of advocating for student success, and a willingness to collaborate with interested parties to address complex educational challenges. Learn about candidates’ positions and records through media coverage so you can make an informed decision when you head to the polls.
School board elections are being held in Kent, New Castle, and Sussex counties on May 14. Check to see if your school district has an election this year. If so, please make time to vote. Our communities, our schools and our children depend on it. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit votedelaware.org.
